All the illustratrions in this portfolio are made
with variations of the cut out technique. This work has two very strong influences: traditional Chinese cutouts and Mola textile art of the Kuna women.

As a child growing up in Costa Rica, I would go back to
Taiwan many times to spend my holidays there.
This is where I was taught, among many other things,
how to fold and cut paper for the Chinese New Year.

Back in Costa Rica, my life was always surrounded by
the vibrant colors and odd shapes the tropics.
This same environment is portrayed on the unique
Molas, made by Kuna women. Molas are an essential
part of a Kuna woman's attire, along with her head
scarf, nose ring and bracelets. They are used on the
chest and the back. Molas themes vary greatly from traditional to mythical, natural and even humorous.
